Defra’s Waste and Resource Evidence Programme sponsors 3 technical sessions at CIWM 2007

DCW today chaired the first of 3 technical sessions, co-sponsored by Defra’s Waste and Resources Evidence Programme (WREP), as part of CIWM’s annual conference in Paignton.

The 3 technical sessions, on waste prevention and behaviour change, decision support systems and resource recovery, showcased emerging results from the Defra programme alongside complementary work funded by other bodies. DCW chairs the Waste and Resources Research Advisory Group, which advises Defra on WREP and co-ordinates waste and resources evidence and research work across theUK.

Defra consults on its new Waste and Resources Evidence Strategy 2007-2011

DCW today chaired a one-day ‘Reflections Event’ at Church House in London, on Defra’s draft Waste and Resources Evidence Strategy up to 2011. The strategy is intended to provide the  evidence to underpin future policy needs, particularly for the implementation of the new Waste Strategy for England 2007.

The event was attended by 100 stakeholders from across the UK. Breakout sessions focused on developing specific project ideas to be considered for inclusion in the 2008 Action Plan. DCW chairs the Waste and Resources Research Advisory Group, which advises Defra on the Waste and Resources Evidence Programme.

Professor David C Wilson chairs 4 UK Waste Strategy Workshop

Professor David C Wilson chaired the 2nd in a series of workshops of the 4UK waste strategy group, which explored common challenges in implementing national waste management strategies across the UK. The 4UK waste strategy group brings together the 4 devolved administrations, environment agencies and representatives from local authorities from across the UK, together with invited representatives of industry, NGOs and academia. This second meeting was hosted in Belfast by the Environment and Heritage Service. DCW was involved in the development of the Northern Ireland waste management strategy, and was invited to be the independent chair, to facilitate the workshop.

Professor David C Wilson publishes paper in Habitat International

A review of informal sector recycling in developing countries by DCW and colleagues at Imperial College appears in the December 2006 issue of Habitat International

Habitat International is the leading academic journal for the study of human settlements, established by the UN Habitat Conference in Vancouver in 1976. This article appears in a special issue on Urban waste management as if people matter. The abstract can be read online at the Science Direct website.

Lyons Inquiry Seminar on ‘Cleaner, Greener Environments

Professor David C Wilson spoke today at one of a series of invited seminars to discuss and critically assess what people want from local government and how local authorities can meet those needs. Sir Michael Lyons is conducting a wide ranging Inquiry into the future roles and funding of local government in England. DCW was a member of the panel on ‘Empowering Authorities to Manage Future Pressures Effectively’. His comments focused on the waste management challenges over the next 15 years.
