Professor David C Wilson spoke today at one of a series of invited seminars to discuss and critically assess what people want from local government and how local authorities can meet those needs. Sir Michael Lyons is conducting a wide ranging Inquiry into the future roles and funding of local government in England. DCW was a member of the panel on ‘Empowering Authorities to Manage Future Pressures Effectively’. His comments focused on the waste management challenges over the next 15 years.

Professor David C Wilson presented the key policies in the new Strategy ‘Towards Resource Management’ at the official launch in the Long Gallery of the Parliament Buildings at Stormont. DCW led the ERM consultancy team supporting the NI Department of the Environment on their review of the Waste Management Strategy, which was originally launched in March 2000. He was a member of the editorial team for the new Strategy.

DCW presented two papers and co-authored a further two at the major international waste management Symposium held this week in Sardinia, attended by nearly 1000 people. DCW’s papers were on the development of a UK national strategy for waste and resources research, and on the development of a regional strategy for waste management in the Russian Baltic Oblast of Kaliningrad (as a case study of how international technical assistance can be made to work in Russia).

Prof David C Wilson has been is leading the ERM consultancy team supporting the NI Department of the Environment on their review of their Waste Management Strategy.
Consultation proposals were published today, under the title Towards Resource Management. Professor Wilson will be presenting the policy proposals to two consultation workshops, in Belfast and Derry, on 6 and 7 December 2005.
