The June issue of the ISWA journal Waste Management & Research (WM&R) is a special issue on Driving waste management towards sustainable development. DCW wrote the keynote paper on ‘Development drivers for waste management’.

This explores how drivers have varied over time, and how they vary today across the world (Waste Manage Res 2007, 25 (3), 198-207). DCW also co-authored a paper on ‘Using research-based knowledge to underpin waste and resources policy’ (Waste Manage Res 2007, 25 (3), 247-256), which examines the theory and practice of ‘evidence-based policy making’ in the waste and resources field.

CIWM launched its new rapid publication journal Communications in Waste and Resources Management (CWRM) today at its Torbay annual conference. The first article in the inaugural issue was written with one of DCW’s students at Imperial College, Nadia Boyarkina. The article focuses on experience with household waste management schemes across Europe, including a case study on collection and disposal of batteries, and draws lessons for the UK.

| DCW today chaired a one-day ‘Reflections Event’ at Church House in London, on Defra’s draft Waste and Resources Evidence Strategy up to 2011. The strategy is intended to provide the evidence to underpin future policy needs, particularly for the implementation of the new Waste Strategy for England 2007.
The event was attended by 100 stakeholders from across the UK. Breakout sessions focused on developing specific project ideas to be considered for inclusion in the 2008 Action Plan. DCW chairs the Waste and Resources Research Advisory Group, which advises Defra on the Waste and Resources Evidence Programme. |

Professor David C Wilson chaired the 2nd in a series of workshops of the 4UK waste strategy group, which explored common challenges in implementing national waste management strategies across the UK. The 4UK waste strategy group brings together the 4 devolved administrations, environment agencies and representatives from local authorities from across the UK, together with invited representatives of industry, NGOs and academia. This second meeting was hosted in Belfast by the Environment and Heritage Service. DCW was involved in the development of the Northern Ireland waste management strategy, and was invited to be the independent chair, to facilitate the workshop.

Professor David C Wilson spoke today at one of a series of invited seminars to discuss and critically assess what people want from local government and how local authorities can meet those needs. Sir Michael Lyons is conducting a wide ranging Inquiry into the future roles and funding of local government in England. DCW was a member of the panel on ‘Empowering Authorities to Manage Future Pressures Effectively’. His comments focused on the waste management challenges over the next 15 years.

DCW co-led a workshop on Defra’s Waste and Resources Research Programme at CIWM’s annual conference in Paignton. His paper outlined the current status of the Programme, for which he Chairs the Advisory Group. The workshop focused on priorities for future evidence needs, prior to the preparation of an R&D Strategy for the next 3 years.
